New Features for the Coastal Hub Viewer
The Copernicus Marine Service’s latest update includes an important new feature for the Coastal Hub viewer, which provides the ability to retrieve time series directly from mapped locations. This improvement strengthens the hubs’ role in delivering actionable insights for coastal monitoring and management.
Exploring the New Time Series Feature
A time series represents data points collected or recorded at successive time intervals. In the context of remote sensing, it allows users to track changes and trends in environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, or air quality over time.
With the new feature in the Arctic and Coastal Hub viewers, users can now retrieve time series directly from the map. By selecting specific locations using the "Points" tool, located on the right-hand of the viewers, charts are generated to display temporal data for all ARCO-based datasets, including:
- Copernicus Marine data, essential for ocean monitoring
- ERA5 hourly climate data, crucial for analysing climate trends
- European air quality and global composition forecasts, supporting atmosphere monitoring
Coastal Hub: Monitoring Sea Surface Temperature
In the Coastal Hub, time series visualisation supports coastal management. Calculating time series for sea surface temperature (SST) helps monitor temperature fluctuations over time, revealing seasonal patterns, long-term trends, and short-term anomalies to support ecosystem understanding, climate modelling, and adaptive strategies for various sectors.
Future Improvements
By integrating this new feature, the viewers of the Arctic and Coastal Hubs provide an intuitive interface to access the available data and calculating time series on-the-fly, enabling users to track trends, detect anomalies, and make informed decisions. Future planned upgrades include refined chart visuals, zoom functionality, and adjustable chart positioning, ensuring user-friendly and precise analyses. This update reflects the commitment of the Copernicus Marine Service to refining its products and services to address evolving user needs.
