Copernicus data supports flood monitoring on Europe’s coasts

ECFAS: A European Coastal Flood Awareness System

As the climate crisis escalates, one of the many impacts includes an increased risk of floods in coastal regions. When huge sheets of water cover low-lying coastal areas, they can result in damage to infrastructure and loss of lives. The Copernicus Marine Service, implemented by Mercator Ocean International supports many diverse applications to safeguard our coasts. One such initiative is the development of a European Coastal Flood Awareness System (ECFAS), which is a candidate for the evolution of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) and integrates data products from various Copernicus Services. ECFAS aims at creating a state-of-the-art solution to allow risk monitoring for European coastal zones. The project has recently released some results, following its one-year milestone.
