WEkEO 4 Coastal Interactions: Challenges and techniques

The Copernicus Coastal Hub was presented at a two-day workshop titled “WEkEO 4 Coastal Interactions”, which took place on 4 and 6 December 2024. Participants were introduced to data, use cases, as well as a short demonstration on how to access the Hub.

WEkEO 4 Coastal Interactions

The Copernicus WEkEO Service, implemented by EUMETSAT, Mercator Ocean International, ECMWF, and the European Environment Agency hosted a two-day workshop titled “WEkEO 4 Coastal Interactions” on 4 and 6 December 2024. The workshop was dedicated to raising awareness about coastal areas, addressing key challenges, and showcasing coastal management capabilities using WEkEO Service products.

The workshop shared applications of WEkEO products focused on the main challenges faced by the coastal regions such as floods, coastal hazards, turbidity and sea level rise. Following the success of last year’s forest monitoring training, which drew over 1,000 participants, this workshop built on that momentum, reaching 1,211 participants. The audience was composed mainly of participants from the scientific community (researchers and students) to decision makers, who engaged in discussions about coastal regions and their unique challenges.

The Coastal Hub Demonstrated

The first day of the workshop on 4 December saw the Copernicus Coastal Hub introduced to participants. Muriel Lux, Environmental policy & major account manager at Mercator Ocean International, presented the Coastal Hub’s capabilities to the audience, going over our data, specific use cases, and demonstrating how to access and use the Hub to support coastal management activities.

The presentation was really appreciated, and many questions were asked by potential users of Copernicus Coastal Hub facilities and use cases. Following the Coastal Hub presentation, other speakers shared user testimonies on their coastal management projects and activities using Copernicus data.

The second day of the workshop on 6 December hosted 4 hands-on training sessions on the WEkEO viewer, Jupyter Notebooks, QGIS, and R Studio, providing participants with practical use cases to gain firsthand experience.

Conclusion

The event was held online via Zoom, and participants received access to tutorials, code, data, and explanatory videos. WEkEO 4 Coastal Interactions provided valuable insights and practical tools for coastal management and was a great platform for the Coastal Hub to be presented to the wider coastal community.
